Embrace the winter solstice with a reflective labyrinth walk and shared group experience. Guided by Jungian Analyst Adina Davidson, this event invites you to navigate both your outer and inner worlds. As you move through the labyrinth, you’ll set intentions for the upcoming season and connect with the deeper aspects of yourself. To what are you holding on? What can you let go?

This gathering is limited to 10 participants to ensure a personal and meaningful experience. After the labyrinth walk, we’ll gather at a local coffee shop where we’ll share our experience of walking the labyrinth and what emerged for each of us.

Join us for an evening of self-reflection and exploration as we delve into the wisdom of renowned Jungian Analyst James Hollis. We’ll start by watching a segment from one of Holli's’s recent interviews, where he discusses the challenges and opportunities of engaging with our inner lives. After the film, we’ll break into groups to discuss his ideas & how they resonate with our own experiences. James Hollis will not be at this event.

This will be a chance to connect with others, share perspectives and consider how we can apply these insights to our personal journeys. To whom or to what are we talking when we engage with oracular tools like Tarot, I-Ching, Runes, or other types of self-contained and ritualized engagement? Does an answer come from somewhere outside of our own individual scope, which C.G. Jung called the objective psyche? Or does it come from a more knowing aspect of ourselves, which Jung calls Self? These are questions that cannot necessarily be answered, but they are essential to a psychologically balanced engagement with the occult.

Using an oracular tool implies a continuum of some sort between the individual framing the encounter (ego) and the space/s from which the answer comes. In addition, the use of a conduit - cards, stones, stalks - have a capacity to facilitate this type of communication.

In this 2-hour Zoom lecture and discussion, we will create a frame from which to imagine this interaction, locating important Jungian terminology along the way, including objective psyche, synchronicity, psychoid and Self. We will also look at ideas connected to personal role and responsibility in active engagement with things larger than ourselves, including the potential for an over-identification with concepts related to magic or fate.

Hallie Durchslag, PhD., LISW-S will lead this class.

Join us as we kick off our new season with a brief annual meeting, followed by an immersive creative experience rooted in Jungian concepts of creativity.

We’ll start with a quick update on our membership, finances, and a vote on board members and officers. Then we’ll dive into a collaborative art session led by board member Carol Laursen, where we will explore and express Jung Cleveland’s spirit through a collective mandala.

No artistic experience needed - just bring your enthusiasm & willingness to contribute! Feel free to bring your favorite art supplies, though materials will be provided. Let’s collaborate to create a vibrant representation of our group’s current & future vibes.

The image of fire expresses an elemental force that can be both creative and destructive. When it is contained and focused, fire is transformative, enhancing what has been placed in it, such as in the shaping and strengthening of metal or in the cooking of food. Uncontained, fire can rage and incinerate, like wildfires consuming forests and homes.

In this presentation, we will explore the symbol of fire through poetry, story, and myth. In particular, we will trace the role of this symbol as a psychological energy that is implicated in the creative life of the individual. This workshop will explore such questions as: What does it mean to live life “as if it were a work of art?”

What prevents us from knowing and living our creative depths? What are the consequences of not living from these depths? In pondering these questions and encountering this powerful symbol we will begin to uncover ways that we might connect with our own creative spark and fan it into a vitalizing and transforming flame.

Jason E. Smith, IAAP, is a Jungian analyst in private practice in Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA. He is the creator and host of the podcast Digital Jung and the author of Religious but Not Religious: Living a Symbolic Life (Chiron Publications). Jason serves as an instructor and training analyst C.G. Jung Institute of New England.

In the alchemical tradition, the great work to be performed was known as the opus. More than just a series of chemical operations, the opus was also understood as a spiritual work involving the deepest aspects of the alchemist’s own being.

As Jung noted, the material worked on by the alchemist was “chiefly the data of his own unconscious.” The true forge of alchemy, in other words, was the human soul. Accordingly, it was understood that certain preparations and precautions were needed before one could undertake such a sacred work.

In this lecture, we will examine some original alchemical texts to discover the key aspects of the opus and to identify those personal qualities that the alchemists felt were necessary to cultivate as preparation for their work. We will discuss the relevance of these ideas for contemporary life, as well as for Jung’s concept of individuation. Further, we will try to discern the practical implications of this symbolic material for our own personal experience of the individuation process.

Anne Robinson, a local Jungian analyst and a practitioner of I Ching for several decades will introduce us to the I Ching and how we can incorporate it in our lives.  We will learn how to cast a hexagram, analyze the structure of a hexagram, formulate a question for the I Ching, find a translation that resonates for each of us and keep an I Ching journal.

Please bring 3 coins for casting and if you own a copy of the I Ching, please bring it.

The I Ching is one of the oldest surviving oracles in the world. It serves as an amazing source of guidance and wisdom for those who approach it with sincerity and openness.  Depending on the translation one uses, it reflects ancient tones of Taoism and Confucianism as well as more secular language of modern day.

Mandalas have been used in many ancient cultures for healing. The term “mandala”, derived from Sanskrit, means circle or magic circle. Mandalas are often geometrical forms. C.G. Jung suggested the mandala is evidence of the human urge to fulfill the pattern of our whole personality.  
 
In the 1970’s, art therapist Joan Kellogg pioneered the use of mandalas for personal growth.  Art therapists use mandalas with clients in groups or individually to this day to talk about the insights gained after creating a mandala. 
 
In this program, Vicki Milnark, art therapist and Jung Cleveland board member will assist attendees to create a personal mandala on a pre-drawn circle using oil pastels and markers.  Together we will explore personal interpretations of the mandala.  Art materials will be provided.

It was Jung who proposed that the human psyche contains within itself psychological constructs developed throughout the evolution of the human species. We will begin this Remembering Jung film and discussion series as Suzanne Wagner, PhD, leads a conversation with von Franz about her relationship with Jung. Von Franz worked with Jung from the age of eighteen until his death in 1961.

The conversation in this film highlights von Franz’s views on women’s issues with the negative animus, the nature of creativity, aspects of synchronicity, reincarnation, and life after death. Afterwards Rosemarie Paini, PhD. and Monica Daugherty, PhD. will lead us in lively discussion. Rose and Monica will host 2 other viewing of videos with Marie-Louise on March 8 & March 22, 2024. Same time, same location. There will be separate registration.

Please join us for a wintery excursion on foot with Jung Board member Mark Davidson as our guide.  On this adventure we will be on the lookout for hidden signs of life within a seemingly lifeless landscape.  Mark led Jung Cleveland members and guests on a wonderfully reflective hike on the shores of Lake Erie in 2022.

At this gathering, Jungian Analyst Adina Davidson will provide a foundational framework of Jung’s view of the human psyche.  We aspire to take an initial glance at the structure of psyche, human development and individuation, how Jungians approach dreams, and the nature of the archetypes. This event is designed for people who are new to Jungian thought, but all are welcome!  Refreshments will be provided.

Together, we will watch the Bill Moyers’ interview of Joseph Campbell titled “Masks of Eternity.” Joseph Campbell was a brilliant scholar of comparative religion, a professor at Sarah Lawrence College, and a prolific author of books on mythology.

Campbell considered myths to be masks of God. In the film, we’ll hear Campbell speak of both the mystery and the horror of God who “you are in your deepest identity.” Campbell’s view of religion was much like Jung’s. Campbell stated in an interview, “I don’t have faith, I have experience.” Jung’s reply to a journalist who asked if he believed in God was, “I don’t believe, I know.”

After viewing the film we’ll discuss our questions and reactions to the material.

Jung Cleveland will meet at the Cleveland Museum of Art (7:00 - 8:30 pm.) to explore archetypal imagery depicted in painting and sculpture. Archetypes portray recurring patterns of situations, characters, or symbols existing universally and instinctively in the collective unconscious of humanity. They provide a way to connect with universal symbols that evoke deep and sometimes unconscious responses. 

We will gather in the entrance lobby and move to the ARTLENS Gallery where we can explore the works that capture the archetypal essence of infancy, childhood, adulthood and old age. After scanning the offerings on the ARTLENS screen, we will visit selected pieces and discuss historical and artistic context as well as our reactions. There will be time to write, reflect and discuss the archetypal layer and its meaning to us personally.  

Jung Cleveland board member, Adina Davidson, PhD, Jungian Analyst, will be our primary guide in this exploration.

On Wednesdays the Cleveland Museum of Art is open until 9:00 p.m.  Admission is free.  

Museum parking is accessible from Jeptha Drive. You may pay for parking in advance or pay on-site at the garage entrance using a credit card.  After 5:00 p.m. parking is $12 for nonmembers of CMA and $7 for CMA members.

Many concepts in Jungian Psychology are helpful for a person on a soul-directed path. This class begins with reverie surrounding our story, including where we came from, who we are, and how we struggle to move forward. Examining the patterns of our lives allows our personal stories and day-to-day interactions to be creative possibilities.

The Psychological perspective is that restoration and a sense of wholeness are possible when life lessons become more integrated. The many experiences that have shaped us can point the direction forward as we find our strength and potential on life's path.

The class will focus on three concepts: the expression of shadow material, understanding the tension of the opposites, and Individuation.

The class is offered in three sessions on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. October 23, Oct. 30, Nov. 6. Each class will focus on a different concept, developing from the previous session.

Over time, SoulCollagers create a deck of personal cards that help them tap into their intuitive wisdom, heal, and transform.  In SoulCollage, we use images to create cards that represent a nameable guide, ally, or challenger within our psyches.  

The practice of creating SoulCollage cards is quiet, peaceful, and intuitive and it doesn’t require artistic skills.  The instructor will bring images and materials to share.  This program is described as a taste because we'll only scratch the surface of the breadth and depth of the practice.

I Can’t Forget What You Couldn’t Tell Me:  A Psychoanalyst Listens to Asylum Seekers

Dr. Auerhahn will discuss her psychoanalytic process evaluating refugees as part of their application for asylum.   She will focus on the emergence of unrepresented content and abject states within the intersubjective matrix that lead to collaborative creation of a story of trauma.  She will also examine how such intra- and inter-personal encounters are structured by the larger social, political and cultural contexts that support, limit, structure, erase and determine what can be known and told. 

Bio:

Nanette Auerhahn received her Ph.D. from Yale University in 1980 and is a psychologist and psychoanalyst in private practice in Beachwood, OH.  She has taught at Yale, Stanford, the California School of Professional Psychology, and Case Western University and is currently on the faculties of the psychiatry department of the Cleveland Clinic and the Cleveland Psychoanalytic Center where she is also chair of the Program Committee and a member of the education and curriculum committees.  Dr. Auerhahn has published numerous articles and book chapters on psychoanalysis and trauma and her writings have won several awards including the 2021 International Deanna Holtzman, Ph.D. Interdisciplinary / Applied Psychoanalysis Award Prize given by the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute and the 2019 Elise Hayman Award granted by the International Psychoanalytic Association for the most cogent, relevant and commendable wok on the Holocaust and genocide.  Dr. Auerhahn is currently editing a book to be published by Routledge titled "The Legacy of War and Genocide: Psychoanalytic Reflections on the Cinema of Massive Psychic Trauma."  Together with Ira Brenner, M.D., she has chaired an annual discussion group on Effects of the Holocaust and Genocide on Survivors and Family Members at the winter meetings of the American Psychoanalytic Association.

The Demeter and Persephone myth can be understood as an archetypal story of individuation through the life span. I am particularly interested in the ways that changing our conscious attitudes as parents of adult children creates change in our own psyche. We will read and think about the Demeter myth with an eye to how we parent or how we were parented and what effect that has had on our individuation process.

Most of us intuitively know that our dreams are important and meaningful. In the context of Jungian theory, dreams provide us with a snapshot of psyche, an image from the unconscious that can broaden and deepen our self-understanding. Interpreting our dreams can allow for psychic balance and illuminate unknown parts of ourselves. The Talmud says “An uninterpreted dream is like an unread letter.” If we listen deeply to our dreams, we can make use of the wisdom that our unconscious is communicating.  

At the same time dreams can be confusing, peculiar and often surreal.  It can be useful to have the support of an intimate community when untangling the meaning offered in a dream.  Adina Davidson, Jungian analyst and graduate of the Chicago Institute, will provide the structure and expertise as we develop collective insights.

This group will offer participants a chance to explore the meaning and value of their own and each others dreams in a small, intimate setting. We will use a form of dream work grounded in Jungian psychology but adapted for use in small groups. The group will meet six Tuesday evenings from 6:30-8:00 and will begin when a sufficient number of committed individuals express interest. While we hope for consistency in attendance price is $35 per class with maximum number of six participants. CEUs available

Our Personal Fairy Tale

Fairy Tales come from cultures around the world. They are stories containing important life themes that weave together. Each story begins with a dilemma holding hope and conflict and a journey with struggle and challenges. The way forward faces good and evil, and there are uncertainties until clarity and wisdom can come into place. Often there are magical influences, something seemingly larger than us, bringing wisdom and guidance. The conclusion is more than “a happy ending,” The Psychological perspective is that something has been restored, and a sense of wholeness is possible when life lessons have been integrated into conscious awareness. 

Our personal Fairy Tale contains similar elements. We each have a story that includes where we came from, who we are and how we struggle in moving forward. Examining our belief system allows the entangled stories to be seen in a creative light and includes the many experiences that have shaped, impeded, and can point the direction forward as we find our strength and potential on life’s path.

 Dreams and Evolution

Dreams can be an integral part of our personal journey toward individuation, a process that in turn guides the human collective into ever increasing states of awareness and compassion. In short, dreams can assist with the evolution of consciousness. But do dreams also influence the evolution of the unconscious? Do archetypal energies change over time? In this talk we will explore the relationships between dreaming and the evolution of conscious and unconscious spheres, including physical, psycheand spiritual. We will draw primarily on Jung’s work with the unconscious and individuation as well as Jeremy Taylor’s work on dreaming and the evolution of consciousness.

Bio

Danny DiRuzza earned a Bachelor’s in Religious Studies at John Carroll University, and went on

to complete a Master’s in Transpersonal Psychology from Sofia University in California, as well as

additional credits from Pacifica Graduate Institute in Depth Psychology. Danny is currently working as a

substitute teacher in North Canton, pursuing professional licensure to teach Health and Wellness, and

writing and illustrating a self-help book on body, imagination, and attention.

Folk tales have been told across the globe and through the centuries and are archetypal stories of psychological development. They illustrate what helps and what hinders, but mostly of the attitudes that are needed to reach a goal.  The narrative of the The Frog Princess accurately illustrates the process of individuation resulting in the potential for wholeness. Individuation is a process of psychological differentiation, having for its goal the development of the unique individual personality.

In this six week course we will explore the symbolic attitude and identify how this facilitates inner development. We will amplify the archetypes that manifest in the tale and translate them into psychological language.  Through this process we can examine the figures and actions of the story and where the character traits and situations arise in our own lives. The final step is to integrate the process illustrated in the tale and apply it when addressing one’s own psychological challenges.
